Huawei Matepad T10: Unboxing and First Impressions

Huawei recently launched their entry-level 10-inch tablet series, the Matepad T10 and Matepad T10s, to compete with other brands’ competitively-priced offerings. Given the growing market for devices for work from home or online schooling, we were quite excited to check out this tablet.

The unit that was sent to us was the most affordable variant, and possibly Huawei’s cheapest 10-inch tablet to date. But, it was definitely not lacking in features. We were pleasantly surprised at the hardware specs that the Matepad T10 had to offer.

The Huawei Matepad T10 comes with the main tablet, an ejector tool, charging cable, and the charger.

The Matepad T10 comes with a conservative package

Aside from sporting a newly refreshed Kirin 710a processor, the 9.7-inch Matepad T10 has a bright IPS screen with 720p resolution. From initial use, the screen was a delight to use even in bright settings. Personally, I was used to WQHD+ resolution on my daily driver, but the Matepad T10’s HD resolution still felt great to use with minimal visible difference in pixel density or image clarity. Lag or sluggishness was also not felt even after installing multiple additional apps.

The display is quite impressive

The Matepad T10 uses an octa-core Kirin 710a chip, developed as an upgrade to the previous generation Kirin 710. There is not a lot of performance improvement, but the 710a is being produced by a different factory altogether using an upgraded process. Standard configuration for RAM and storage for the local model is 2GB RAM and 32GB ROM. This hardware configuration is pretty normal at this price point, but inital tests have proved that the CPU and RAM combination is more than enough to handle some relatively demanding applications for the Matepad T10 and even do some hardcore games at low to mid settings.

The overall build quality of the Matepad T10 is fantastic and definitely did not feel cheap at all. The back is made with a metallic material while the front glass also seems sturdier and less plasticky than other 10-inch tablets we’ve tried, or even the Matepad T10’s smaller brother, The Matepad T.

There are two speaker grills on the left and right sides, which gives users a stereo sound experience. Overall the dual-speaker design is a great idea, but it would have been better if the grilles were on the upper sides. Since they are near the center of the sides, when used with two hands, the grilles will definitely be blocked by your hands. It is good, however, when using the Matepad T10 propped up while watching videos.

The Matepad T10 still has a 3.5mm jack and charges using a USB Type-C port. The only other thing on the side of the tablet is the microSD card slot, which can support up to 512GB of memory. Thankfully, it does not use proprietary Huawei cards but just the standard MicroSD card. It does not have a SIM card slot.

The cameras are entry-level shooters with a 5MP (back) + 2MP (front) configuration, which is also prety standard for this price point. Tablets are not known to have exceptional cameras and the Matepad T10 is unsurprisingly no different. Initial tests showed that the tablet produced low-detail photos with flushed colors under low light. Under high brightness, details improved but still lacked color accuracy.

Battery capacity is rated at 5100mah which should be enough to power the tablet through the day. However, there are no fast charging capabilities as the charger is only rated at 5V/1A, which means a total power input of 5W. This means that the tablet will probably take a long time to charge (compared to fast charging standards). We will do more testing on the Matepad T10 our full review.
